Eating disorders are more common than most people even realize. One of the more common of these disorders is Anorexia Nervosa. This is a disorder in which an individual has an unhealthy relationship with food, and often an inaccurate body image that has them abstain or severely restrict their food intake. This can be a devastating disorder that affects all aspects of the afflicted person’s life and all who care about them.

There are many symptoms of this disorder, in fact many of us would simply overlook some of the symptoms of the disorder, especially in the beginning phases, or someone who is able to hide or mask other behaviors associated with the disease. Some of the more common behavioral symptoms of anorexia nervosa include but are not limited to dieting when the person is already thin, an obsession with calories or fat, lying about the food that has been consumed, a preoccupation with food, or secretive behaviors in association with food. Of course, these are not the only anorexia symptoms associated with body image issues. When it comes to the body image issues these are different from person to person.

You will find that the body image symptoms of anorexia nervosa include but are not limited to dramatic weight loss without a medical cause, feeling fat even if they are under weight, a fixation on the body image, critical of their own appearance, and also denying being too thin even when they are at an unhealthy weight. These are often the first symptoms of anorexia nervosa that are noticed by the people who are close to the afflicted individual. There are other signs of Anorexia that many people are not always aware are associated with this disorder but assume that they are associated with other disorders associated with eating. Some of these symptoms include using diet pills, laxatives, and even diuretics.

Many people who wrestle with this disorder abuse water pills and even herbal supplements that are meant to suppress appetite. Another of the more common anorexia nervosa symptoms include throwing up after eating, and often disguising the sound of the vomiting by turning on the water. Many people who suffer from this disorder also exercise compulsively, which can be dangerous when not enough calories have been consumed to support the physical activity. It is important to note that not everyone exhibits any or all of these symptoms. Each person is very different, but the symptoms listed here are some of the more classic symptoms to watch out for either in yourself or someone that you care about. This is a serious illness that needs to be addressed if one is suspected of any or all of these behaviors.
