The first symptom that most parents of autistic children notice is that their child does not communicate with them. He does not try to pronounce words typical for a three year old. The toddler may give the impression of being deaf, although hearing tests do not show an indication of hearing problems.

The child may be unable to make friends with other children his own age. He may seem uninterested in sharing in the joys of other children. Because of the inability to relate to others, an autistic child may display a lack of empathy. He may be unable to understand when another person feels pain or sorrow. All these autism symptoms can in turn leave the child feeling isolated and lonely.

Behavioral Symptoms

Another symptom of autism is repeated types of behavior. For example, rocking back and forth, unable to cope with changes in his routine (becoming very upset), and an out of the ordinary attachment to objects. Children often repeat numerous times a phrase they have heard before.

Symptoms may vary drastically and can range from mild to severe. Many parents of autistic children often state that their child likes to play alone. Another major symptom is that the child avoids eye contact with other people, including the parents.

Although some children display below normal intelligence, others are above average. During the teenage years, symptoms of autism may include depression and anxiety. This is especially the case if the teenager has average or above average intelligence. Other teenagers with autism experience seizure disorders by the time they reach puberty.

Treatment

Most children benefit from early and rigorous treatment. They improve in their ability to communicate and relate to others. Many autistic children grow up to be independent, productive adults. Contrary to popular belief, few autistic children are socially isolated. Statistics show that at least 33 percent grow up to become at least partially independent. In summary, although autism symptoms include an inability to communicate and relate to others, early detection is essential in order for a child to receive proper treatment. Children that receive the required attention often achieve an independent lifestyle. Since the symptoms of autism often reveal themselves by the time a child is three years old, it is critical that parents and caregivers pay attention to a child’s developmental progress, as it can determine the quality of life that an autistic child will enjoy the rest of his life.
